Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn at Wescustogo Hall

May 16 @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Cover Image of Big HouseProf. Thomas Hubka, author of Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn: The Connected Farm Buildings of New England, will present a lively, richly illustrated presentation on Thursday, May 16. Admission is free; donations accepted.

Big House Little House has “the suspense of a detective story and at times the poignance of deeply felt, sympathetic, and social history.” (Boston Globe). The book has been continuous publication for almost 40 years, and is a standard for New England architecture history and cultural studies.

Prof. Hubka did a lot of his groundbreaking research in the North Yarmouth area and surrounding towns; photos and descriptions of many area houses and farm buildings appear in his book.

Our changing, developing landscape makes historical reflections about our architectural heritage a critical part of understanding settlement—back in the 1800s and as we move forward into the future.

Professor Hubka is a Professor Emeritus in the Dept. of Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Architecture.

This event is sponsored collaboratively by North Yarmouth, Yarmouth, and Cumberland Historical Societies; Skyline Farm, and Pownal Scenic & Historic Society. Come mingle and meet with all organizations starting at 5 PM; enjoy refreshments. The presentation starts at 6. See you there!

5/12/2024 UPDATE: Due to medical issues, Prof. Hubka will not be joining us in person BUT will give his presentation to us via Zoom on the big screen. This will be an interactive program—he’ll be presenting all information as he would in person. Q&As and all comments and discussion welcome!
