The story of Communism as a worldwide phenomenon has essentially drawn to a close. Distinguished historian Robert V. Daniels has updated A Documentary History of Communism in Russia to reflect the tumultuous events of Russian Communism’s final epoch.
Since 1985, when the second edition was published, vast reservoirs of archival material about the history of Communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe became available. As President Gorbachev consented to a complete historical reconsideration, key documents were published in Soviet journals and throughout Eastern Europe between 1987 and 1991.
This newest edition contains 30 new documents, including Gorbachev’s resignation speech carried on Central Television on December 15, 1991. The nearly 200 documents included here provide a comprehensive picture of important events, issues, and leaders from every stage of 20th century Communism, representing both party line and dissident perspectives. Daniels’s lucid translations and extensive commentary continue to add invaluable insights for all students of Soviet studies.

Robert V. “Bill” Daniels, professor emeritus of history at the University of Vermont (UVM), died peacefully on March 28, 2010, at the age of 84. He was a distinguished scholar of Russian and Soviet political history, with 21 books and more than 150 articles to his credit.
