Born and educated in Germany (M.A. in music education), Marshall moved to the US in the sixties and earned a PH.D. in German literature. She translated several books, (e.g. Charles Rosen, The Classical Style; James K Lyon, Bertolt Brecht in America), while also teaching music and German. Regular trips to European countries always included visits to museums and historical sites. Upon early retirement from a career in educational publishing, she decided that a weekly museum or gallery visit should be a feature of her retirement routine. She and her husband live in Boston, so the museum trips centered on New England. Soon she found herself researching more distant destinations and locations and felt the need for a guidebook. Since none was in print, she decided to write it herself.
She is currently laying the groundwork for a follow-up volume on the art museums of New York and New Jersey.
